Understand the Hidden Forces That Shape How We Think

I’m a Harvard Professor, Author, and Behavioral Science Expert who studies brainwashing, media influence, and human behavior at its limits. For over two decades, I’ve done rigorous research on brainwashing and influence. I use storytelling, humor, and humanity to make complex ideas accessible. My keynote talks give audiences clarity, resilience, and ethical insight — leaving them not only informed, but also feeling more grounded.

Keynote Topics & Talks

Drawing on years of teaching, public talks, and interviews, I’ve developed keynote presentations that resonate with audiences from classrooms to conferences. Each blends historical insight with present-day relevance and offers practical tools for navigating influence in daily life.

Is Brainwashing Still Real?

People often ask whether brainwashing is just a Cold War relic. In this talk, I explore how persuasion shows up in cults, politics, advertising, and digital culture today. The truth is that influence touches all of us — and recognizing that is the first step toward resilience.

Resonates with: universities, public forums, book festivals, general audiences.

Mind Control in the Age of Information

From Cold War experiments to social media algorithms to AI companionship, the mechanics of influence have changed but never disappeared. This keynote traces how manipulation evolved from ideological battles to today’s information wars, showing audiences how history helps us understand our present.

Resonates with: universities, tech companies, professional associations, media organizations.

How to Spot a Scam, Cult, or Manipulative Narrative

Why do smart people fall for scams or cults? This talk explores how manipulation preys on universal needs like trust, belonging, and fear. I share practical ways to recognize red flags in marketing, politics, and media — tools audiences can use in everyday life.

Resonates with: wellness groups, recovery communities, civic forums, general audiences.

The Ethics of Influence

Where’s the line between healthy persuasion and unethical manipulation? I draw on case studies, research, and lived examples to help organizations and communities navigate that question — and foster cultures rooted in trust and integrity.

Resonates with: businesses, nonprofits, leadership programs, professional conferences.

Trauma, Technology, and Trust

Trauma is often the missing piece in stories of influence and control. Here I connect historical examples with today’s digital challenges, showing how collective vulnerabilities shape the way we respond to media and authority — and how awareness can build both empathy and clarity.

Resonates with: wellness and mindfulness groups, therapy and recovery communities, universities.

What Audiences Take Away

Before my talks, many people tell me they feel overwhelmed by cultural noise or unsure what to trust. Afterward, they describe feeling clearer, more resilient, and even hopeful.

Before

  • Overloaded by conflicting narratives
  • Unsure how to recognize manipulation
  • Anxious about cultural shifts and instability
  • Curious but worried the subject will be too dark or abstract

After

  • Equipped with practical frameworks for discernment
  • Grounded in historical context that makes sense of the present
  • More confident navigating complexity and influence
  • Inspired to make ethical, clear-minded choices and share insight with others

Audiences I Speak To

I’ve shared my work in classrooms, public lectures, and on leading podcasts — and I now bring these insights to keynote audiences. My keynotes are designed for audiences who want to make sense of a confusing world and act with clarity. I speak to:

  • Universities and Professional Associations — I share research that sparks discussion and helps students, faculty, and professionals connect history to today’s challenges.
  • Businesses and Organizations — I help leaders and teams navigate ethical influence, build resilience, and foster cultures of trust. As a corporate and ethics keynote speaker, I explore influence in the digital age with lessons that apply across industries.
  • Wellness and Mindfulness Communities — I explore how trauma, technology, and persuasion shape daily life, and I offer tools for grounded awareness.
  • General Audiences — from book clubs and salons to festivals and civic forums, I bring complex ideas to life with storytelling, humor, and accessible frameworks.

Wherever I’m speaking, my goal is the same — to offer some clarity, context, and insight that people can bring back into their work, relationships, and communities.

One of the Few Scholars Who Can Trace the Full History of Mind Control

I interviewed Rebecca for a documentary on the history of “mind control” and was extremely happy with how the interview went. This is a topic that she has devoted a good part of her career to studying, and as a result she is one of the very few scholars who can convincingly discuss the entire history of this phenomenon, tracing connections between the early Cold War brainwashing panic and the United States’ response to that panic in the form of its clandestine program of research into mind control, up to contemporaneous developments in behavioral and emotional engineering by today’s tech giants. She is also very compelling on camera and thus an ideal narrator of this story. Andreas Killen Professor of History, City College and the Graduate Center, CUNY
